The Pokemon series started as a video game in 1996 and became popular worldwide, so the faces on this XE88 arcade game will look familiar to almost everyone. The game itself calls them 宠物小精灵, "Pocket Monster". The old guide said the familiar elements had been swapped for these cute characters while the way of playing stayed the same: choose your bet and predict which character comes up.

What is on the screen

A ring of small character tiles runs around the edge of a forest scene: a yellow electric mouse, an orange fire lizard, a blue water turtle, a green seed creature and a cream-coloured cat with a coin on its forehead. Top-left is a jackpot meter, and a label in the corner switches between PLAYER and TIE from round to round.

The multiplier grid

The lower half is the betting grid. Four characters run across it (the electric mouse, fire lizard, turtle and seed creature), and there are three rows, so twelve cells in all. Each cell has its own multiplier.

The figures move between rounds. One screenshot shows x28, x14, x8 and x4 on the top row; another shows x40, x20, x11 and x7 on the same row. The electric mouse always carries the biggest number and the seed creature the smallest. Across all the screenshots, the multipliers range from x4 to x46.

On the right of the grid are three more cells: BANK x2, TIE x9 and PLAYER x2. These look like a banker-or-player side bet decided with each round.

Playing a round

  1. Set your chip unit with the CHIPS button (x100 in the screenshots).
  2. Tap the cells you want to back. BET shows your total stake, BAL your balance.
  3. Press START. The ring lights up and settles on a result.
  4. Winning cells pay their multiplier; LAST RESULT shows what came up, and REBET repeats your last bets.

The last screenshot shows a big silhouette of a character on a yellow card, under the Pocket Monster logo: a "who's that?" reveal before the winner is shown.

Before you play

This game runs on the same grid as Forest Dance, just with different faces. High multipliers are rare results, not better value. Pick a chip budget first. You will find the rest of the XE88 arcade games here, and you can play Pocket Monster on XE88 when you are ready. 18+ only.

Quick questions

Is the XE88 Pokemon game an official Pokemon product?

Nothing on screen says so. The game calls itself Pocket Monster and borrows the look of the famous characters; treat it as an arcade betting game, not a licensed title.

Do the multipliers stay the same every round?

No. The screenshots show different figures in different rounds, for example x28 in one and x40 in another for the same cell.
